BPD is a world-wide network of partners involving government, business, civil society and donors.

Small-scale Providers of Water and Sanitation Services

To many millions of the urban and rural poor small scale operators who sell water (and occasionally provide sanitation) are a vital service.  The role of these small operators, many of them in the informal private sector, has gained increased attention in recent times, with more policy-makers realising the valuable link to otherwise unserved communities.

Dealing with cross-sector partnerships that bring water and sanitation to the poor, BPD is very interested in findings and improving ways to work through these individuals and small enterprises in order to better the services that poor communities receive.

Accordingly BPD has created this portal to promote a wider understanding of the role and potential of such small providers.  In doing so will soon share widely the work of other individuals and organisations who have shown an interest and enthusiasm for the topic.

Further information coming in early 2007.

LATEST NEWS

BPD has just completed work with AfD (and Hydroconseil) that looks at the role that independent network operators play in providing services to those that have traditionally struggled to get access.  Work in Mali, Mauritania, Ghana and Mozambique has led to a process of ongoing dialogue around the issue in each country, and a set of case studies.  A synthesis report has just been published, containing findings and practical recommendations for both practitioners and policymakers.  Please see Access through innovation: Expanding water service delivery through independent network providers

Support to partnership projects

Part of the BPD's mandate is to provide non-financial support to partnership projects.  We are especially keen to hear of any partnership projects (nascent or ongoing) involving small-scale providers that would be interested in BPD support. More details.
