Events: Developing Partnerships in Practice: BPD Skills Training in Lilongwe, Malawi, 5-8 June 2007

Southern Africa-based?  Engaged in partnerships in the water and sanitation sector?  BPD has up to 36 spaces for a one-of-its-kind highly interactive course on partnership practice.  Aimed at policymakers and practitioners from across the public, private and civil society sectors, BPD brings a number of tools and frameworks to help develop your partnering skills. Supported with funds from the EU Water Facility and now in its fourth delivery, this tried and tested course is being offered from 5-8 June in Lilongwe.  For further information and an application form, please see www.bpdws.org.  The deadline for applicants is 14 May 2007.

Though the EUWF funding is focused primarily on Africa, BPD would welcome opportunities to offer this course with support from other organisations in other regions.

Resources: Governance Assessment Tool for Municipal Water and Sanitation Services

Accountability?  Transparency?  Poverty focus?  BPD manages a set of tools that unpack these difficult concepts so that partnerships for water supply and sanitation are implemented more effectively.  They were originally developed by a consortium of Swiss organizations through an intensive multi-stakeholder process; as such, they provide a wealth of suggestions for practitioners and policy-makers working in partnerships both across and within specific sectors.  One of the resources is the ‘Self-Assessment Tool’ – this is an interactive assessment (available online or on CD-Rom) which assists municipal providers to review ten key factors that relate to the governance of water and sanitation service delivery. BPD is eager for your feedback on this and the other tools – please find them at www.partnershipsforwater.net and contact Urooj Amjad at BPD for further information.

Project Work: Tracking sanitation
partnerships in Tanzania

Are you working on partnerships in Tanzania?  BPD is supporting the development of sanitation partnerships in Dar es Salaam by assisting the Water and Sanitation Program, WaterAid and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.  Over 18 months BPD will make three visits to track the development of a new social marketing partnership, which aims ultimately to have impacts across the city.  The first trip will be between 1 and 8 of May, so if you are keen on talking about partnerships and other matters with BPD staff member David Schaub-Jones, please contact him nowIf you’re not in Tanzania, but would like to hear more about the work, then by all means get in touch.

BPD Facilitation Support: New Partnership Models and Donor Harmonisation at Work...

Over the past few months, BPD has been invited to facilitate discussions between partners in a number of partnership projects.  BPD worked with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a public company consortia (including Vitens and Evides) to develop a learning framework to assess their support to utilities in a few key countries.  A macro-partnership agreement was also drawn up.  A second example saw BPD facilitate a two-day workshop of the Private Infrastructure Development Group, a multi-donor initiative.  PIDG encourages private infrastructure investment that contributes to growth and poverty reduction in developing countries.  It does this by providing financial, practical and strategic support through an umbrella of instruments.  By facilitating such discussions, BPD not only provides direct support to such initiatives, but also has a tremendous opportunity to bring their learning back into BPD’s partnership building tools and frameworks.
