Sanitation Competition

BPD is delighted to announce the latest installment of its annual Christmas title competition!

As in previous years, the best suggestion for a title for the 3,500 word article will receive a book of their choice from the Amazon Website (up to a value of £20 before postage) and envy of their peers on the BPD mailing list and beyond.  J. K. Rowling’s next book is now at your fingertips!  Or why not “The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why It Matters” by Rose George (an Economist book of the year).

Last year’s winner – just to remind you – was Alex Nash for “To let or toilet? Is that the question? The hidden challenges of selling sanitation”.

This year’s article, wrapping up the International Year of Sanitation for BPD – is on the widespread, yet poorly understood role of sanitation entrepreneurs and what to do about it.

So please view the article and join in the competition!

The deadline is Wednesday 14 January 2009.

Conflict is not necessarily negative

Over the past several weeks, BPD has been exploring how conflict dynamics on the community level might affect successful service delivery in water and sanitation. Through an online forum, participants provided examples from their extensive experience of conflict and water management issues. In early 2009, BPD will explore this topic further with a view to incorporating a conflict-sensitive focus within future BPD research programmes and training modules.

Areas for further discussion include:

  • Conflict is not necessarily negative for watsan service delivery
  • The role of indigenous intermediation by community service organisations, business leaders and traditional elders
  • The impact of the lack of credibility of water service authorities if they cannot deliver services
  • The institutional support needed for each stakeholder to deal with conflict at the community level
